Reflections on Death and Dying
Course Description
This course explores the ethical, political, and economic controversies related to modern death through the lens of the humanities and fine arts. The course gives particular attention to such issues as physician-assisted dying; mass casualty events; economic disparities in medical treatment; global health, including pandemics; the environmental impact of burial; the role of the visual arts, news, and popular media in death and dying; and issues of private and public memory in commemoration. Students will apply course material to a creative or scholarly project in the humanities that addresses a major controversy, theme, or issue covered in the course.
