African American Literature
Course Description
This course offers a study of modern African American fiction. It traces the discrete and unifying themes of the canonic works of authors such as John Edgar Wideman, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, Claudia Rankine, and James Baldwin. Students are introduced to the history of distinct genres, content, and contexts-- engaging in critical analysis of fiction, poetry, essays, and film as forms of expressive culture. As a course that satisfies the common general education course in literature, African American Literature is designed to provide you with the language with which to talk about literary texts, to help you to develop your ability to read, to understand, and to appreciate and experience them in ways that enhance your confidence and commitment as readers.
