Course Title
Imagining America
Course Description
This course explores the extent to which the United States, more than any nation before it, was the product of literary imagination. We will look at how a range of authors in the early American, early national, and antebellum periods raised questions about what it means to be an American, what it means to write something that might be called an American Literature, and what even counts as literature in the first place. With an eye to connecting this literary history to the present, we will trace how answers to these questions continue to define the limits and possibilities of "Americanness" today.
