Course Title
Contemporary Caribbean Literature
Course Description
This course introduces students to some of the principal writers and texts of the English, French, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Through a close reading of novels, short fiction, poetry, and some film, we will explore common themes (colonialism, decolonization, and movement - both forced and involuntary migration, rural to urban, and island to metropole journeys) emerging from these linguistically, ethnically, and socio-historically diverse communities. Students will develop familiarity with prominent Caribbean movements and an understanding of key words and terms associated with literatures of the Caribbean.
