Course Title

Native American Literature

Course Description

Native American Literatures begins in a complex oral tradition, continues in struggles to express indigenousrealities through languages of colonizers, and then flowers in the 1960s into the Native American Renaissance that continues today. Investigating work from multiple genres as they explore such topics as storytelling, identity, place, and humor, this course will delve into oral traditions and then turn its focus to the contemporary era, where we will see Native American Renaissance writing reach back to themes and structures from ancient traditions while also dramatizing the sometimes harsh realities-and exuberant joys-of contemporary and past Native American lives.
