Course Description

Using gender as a lens, this course investigates writing by women in order to ask such questions as the following: What is women's literature? Does gender shape topic, theme, and structure? Is there a "women's tradition" in literature? Typically, the course will cross national, temporal, and generic boundaries, and will pay attention to the racial, social, and cultural diversity of women's writing. Topics might include the self, other women, men, children, motherhood, politics, race, class, social justice, rituals and ceremonies, sexuality, spirituality, and the process of writing.
