This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary field and will provide critical frameworks for thinking about the social construction of gender at the personal and at institutional levels. Historical and cross-cultural perspectives on women's roles in culture, the work place, the family; the social construction of gender, sexuality, and racism; social control mechanisms and ideologies. The course will combine history, theory, and some survey of key feminist and GLBTQ texts, and will use scholarly as well as personal, visual as well as written, texts.
