Description of Program

The Master of Science in Digital Media teaches the tools and theory of the complex and everchanging world of digital communication. This program empowers students to create, evaluate and utilize contemporary modes of communication within their professional workplace. Employers will find this skill set beneficial, as many organizations have traditional and/or underutilized workplace communication practices and/or pay outside agencies to handle their digital endeavors. This program requires hands-on learning and small group work in a mentoring academic environment, leading to tool acquisition and professional development for the modern workplace.

Technical Standards

Technical Standards define the observational, communication, cognitive, affective, and/or physical capabilities deemed essential to successfully complete, irrespective of a particular specialization, a Masters program in Communication at Bellarmine University. Students matriculating through Bellarmine’s School of Communication must be able to achieve the following Technical Standards, with or without reasonable accommodations, through a continuous evaluation process to determine ongoing proficiency:

  1. Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communication.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to mass communication.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of peoples and cultures and of the significance and impact of mass communication in a global society.

  5. Understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.

  6. Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity; (Please reference the AEJMC Code of Ethics: http://www.aejmc.org/home/about/code-of-ethics/).

  7. Think critically, creatively and independently.

  8. Conduct research and evaluate information by methods appropriate to the communication professions in which they work or study.

  9. Write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communication professions, audiences and purposes they serve.

  10. Critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.

  11. Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts.

  12. Apply current tools and technologies appropriate for the communication professions in which they work, and to understand the digital world.

  13. Contribute to knowledge appropriate to the communication professions in which they work.
