The creative writing minor is intended to give students a broad introduction to the practice of writing creatively about one’s self and the world. Writing courses are offered in several genres—including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and playwriting—and involve creating original material in a workshop environment with a focus on developing the craft of writing. These classes also include the study of celebrated writers, which can be further supplemented by classes in literature. Students in the minor are encouraged to participate in Bellarmine’s literary society and the literary magazine Ariel, which gives them the opportunity to enhance writing and editing skills, make social and professional connections, participate in readings, and attend creative writing events in Louisville. The Creative Writing minor pairs well with any major, as it enhances creative and analytical approaches to any academic discipline. For students who are considering going on to a graduate writing program, our students have earned MFA degrees from Columbia University, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Vermont College, University of Southern Maine, Spalding University, and others.
