Revise and condense course requirements to better suit the needs of students in the 21st century. Changes include

• Eliminate the following upper division lab courses: Chem 307L, 308L, 309L, 421L
• Remove Chem 421 as a requirement
• Remove BMB 301L as a requirement
• Change Physics Requirement to either Phys 201/202 or Phys 205/206
• Reduce Research requirement from 4 credit hours to 2 credit hours (no longer require CHEM 330, 331)
• Addition of two-semester 300-Level Integrated Lab Course
• Addition of 1-hr Seminar Course
• Change Math Requirement to Math 117, 118, plus one of the following: Math 205, 215, 216 or CS 150

The current B.S. in Chemistry was established in 2009 as a track for students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in chemistry; the specific requirements were consistent with recommendations from the American Chemical Society (ACS). We have neither changed nor reviewed those initial requirements since degree implementation. To meet the evolving needs of chemistry graduates in the 21st century, we analyzed our program with the goal of establishing a more streamlined and flexible approach. At the same time, we aimed to maintain consistency with ACS recommendations.

The proposed curriculum results from the analysis of chemistry programs at more than 30 benchmark institutions. Some programs required more coursework than ours. Others required less. Because careers in the 21st century are likely to change more rapidly than the past, we chose to design a curriculum that provided students with the versatility they would need to adapt to change. As a result, we design a curriculum with following guidelines.

Fewer required courses allowing students to design a path the suits their interests.
More course integration at the upper division level. The traditional separation of chemistry into the subdisciplines of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry is not as relevant in the 21st century; the boundaries are blurred as most real-world chemistry is an amalgam of all subdisciplines.

Most of the changes apply to upper division courses and requirements. Lower division courses will remain unchanged and are consistent with programs at other institutions, facilitating potential student transfer.
