Proposal main points:
1. rename minor from Television News and Sports Broadcasting to Broadcast, Production, and Performance.
2. revise the minor's catalog description of the program

Rationale:
In light of Bellarmine’s move to Division One and the university’s growing focus on athletics, the Communication department proposes dividing its minor in “TV News and Sports Broadcasting” into two distinct minors: “Broadcast, Production, and Performance” and “Sports Media.”

The outlets for opportunities in sports journalism are growing tremendously across the country. More sporting events are being produced live today than any time in history, and the need for young professionals to fill roles in this area are also growing. Even here at Bellarmine, live television production of sporting events continues to increase with every school year. Division One has provided greater opportunities for our students to produce sports media as interns and freelance photographers, videographers, and radio broadcasters. This trend will only continue upward.

In addition, there are needs for more sports journalists in roles that continue to become available on the internet.

One of the things driving all this is the growth in sports betting. Like it or not, sports betting continues to grow each year and, with that, comes more interest in following sporting events as they happen. Live tv coverage is the most instantaneous way people can get that information.

Therefore, offering a sports media minor will prepare our students for these roles. Roles, I think students are wanting to learn and will attract many to come here who wouldn't do so otherwise.
